Who we are
Is My Roof South Facing? is a free online tool designed for UK homeowners to check whether their roof is suitable for solar panels. The service is operated by the website owner, who acts as the data controller under the UK General Data Protection Regulation and the Data Protection Act 2018.
What information we collect
We collect the following types of information when you use this service.
Postcode and address. Your postcode, or the address you choose, is used to look up your roof. The postcode and the map coordinates used for the lookup are kept in a temporary cache for up to 30 days so that repeat lookups are quick. The cache holds no name or email address and is not linked to you.
Location data. If you choose to use the "Use my location" feature, we obtain your coordinates so that the roof lookup starts on your own building. They are used for the lookup and held in the same temporary cache described above.
Quote request information. If you submit the quote request form, we collect your name, email address, telephone number (if provided), postcode, roof orientation result, and estimated annual energy generation figure.
Email sign-ups. If you ask for your result by email, or for a reminder about the end of the 0% VAT rate and changes to the main grants, we collect your email address together with your postcode, your roof result and the choices you made. Reminders are only sent if you ask for them, and every reminder includes a link to unsubscribe.
Usage data. If you accept analytics cookies in the banner, we use Google Analytics to collect anonymised data about how visitors use the service. This includes pages visited, time spent on each page, device type and the first half of the postcode you search for (for example SW1A), never the full postcode. Nothing is collected if you decline. You can also opt out of Google Analytics by installing the Google Analytics browser opt-out add-on.
How we use your information
We use your information for the following purposes.
To provide the roof orientation check service. When you enter a postcode or use your location, we query the Google Solar API to retrieve roof orientation and solar potential data for your address.
To connect you with solar installers. If you submit the quote request form, your contact details and roof assessment results are shared with MCS-certified solar panel installers who can quote for your area. You tick a box to give your consent before the form can be submitted.
To send you what you ask for. If you sign up for your result or a reminder by email, we use your email address to send exactly that and nothing else.
To improve the service. Anonymised usage data helps us understand how people use the tool so that we can make it better.
We will never sell your personal information to third parties. We will never use your information for purposes unrelated to those described in this policy.
Who we share your information with
Solar panel installers. If you request quotes, your information is shared with the solar panel installers who contact you. These are independent businesses and each has its own privacy policy.
Google. We use the Google Solar API to retrieve roof and solar data, and Google Analytics to collect anonymised usage statistics. You can review Google's privacy policy at policies.google.com/privacy.
Mapbox. We use Mapbox to display maps, to suggest addresses as you type (the text you type and your IP address are sent to Mapbox for this) and to turn your location into a postcode. You can review Mapbox's privacy policy at mapbox.com/legal/privacy.
Our email provider. We use an email delivery service (currently Resend) to send the emails you ask for. It receives your email address and the content of that email, and nothing else.
We do not share your information with any other third parties, except where we are required to do so by law.
How we store your information
Quote request data is stored securely in an encrypted database. This data is retained for up to 24 months from the date of submission, after which it is permanently deleted.
Email sign-up data is kept until you unsubscribe or ask us to delete it, and for no more than 24 months.
Cached solar lookup results, which do not contain any personal information, are retained for up to 30 days.
We have taken appropriate technical and organisational measures to protect your information against unauthorised access, loss, or misuse.
Your rights
Under UK data protection law, you have the right to access the personal information we hold about you, to request that we correct any inaccuracies, to request that we delete your information, to object to or request the restriction of processing, and to withdraw your consent at any time.
To exercise any of these rights, please contact us by email at oye@saferoute.uk. We will respond to your request within 30 days.
Cookies
This website uses Google Analytics cookies only, and only if you accept them in the banner shown on your first visit. They collect anonymised information about how visitors use the service. If you decline, no analytics cookies are set. We do not use advertising cookies or any other third-party tracking cookies.
You can change your choice at any time using "Cookie settings" in the footer of any page. You can also manage cookies through your browser, which usually lets you refuse or delete them.
Changes to this policy
We may update this privacy policy from time to time. Any changes will be posted on this page, and the "last updated" date at the top will be revised accordingly.
